Sample Prompt
As my cultural advisor, inform me about the essential etiquette practices to know before travelling to Japan. Include specific scenarios like dining, business meetings, and public transportation
Sample Response
Dining: When eating, it is polite to say "itadakimasu" before starting and "gochisosama deshita" after finishing your meal, expressing gratitude for the food. Always use chopsticks properly: do not stick them vertically into a bowl of rice, as this resembles a funeral ritual.
Business Meetings: Punctuality is crucial in Japanese business culture, as it reflects respect and seriousness. Bring plenty of business cards, as exchanging them is a formal ritual. Present and receive cards with both hands and a slight bow, and treat the received cards with respect, never writing on them or stuffing them casually into your pockets.
Public Transportation: Be mindful of your surroundings. It’s important to be quiet, as loud conversations are considered disruptive. Priority seating should always be respected for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with disabilities.
